VJ Books answers your questions about Advance Reading Copies (ARCs) and Uncorrected Proofs   Advance reading copies (ARCs) are trade paper-sized soft cover books sent by publishers to bookstores prior to the release of a title to promote the book.     Many collectors and book enthusiasts consider these to be the true first edition of any given title, and very collectible.  Most ARCs have "pictorial wrappers" (an industrial term meaning printed paper covers with a picture).  They are usually imprinted with the words "Advance Reading Copy" and/or "Review Copy - Not Intended for Resale."  These are often referred to as galleys.  Uncorrected proofs are also trade-sized soft cover books, usually bound in plain paper, and are produced for final review prior to publication.
