A REMAINDER MARK is just that - a mark to the page edges of a book. It can be as simple as an ink dot, or as invasive as a large black slash. Putnam occassionally stamps the letter "P" on the page edges and Simon and Schuster sometimes stamps their logo.
This mark is placed on the page edges by the publisher as books are returned from book stores or sold to discounters.
A remainder mark reduces the value of a collectible book. The amount of that reduction is based on the relative scarcity of the title. However, a remainder-marked copy of a first edition, first printing still is more collectible than a later printing of the same title.
A PRICE-CLIPPED book has had the price cut from the fly leaf on the jacket front. A substantial amount of the value of a collectible book resides in the condition of the dustjacket. A price-clipped copy will command less than an unclipped copy of the same title. The amount of the devaluation is dependant on the relative scarcity of the title.
