Jack McEvoy is at the end of the line as a crime reporter. Forced to take a buy-out from the LA Times as the newspaper grapples with dwindling readership and revenues, he's got 30 days left on the job. His last assignment? Training his replacement, a low cost reporter just out of J-school who couldn't find the police station if it was right next store to the Times, which it is. But Jack has other plans for his exit. He is going to go out with a bang - a final story that will win the newspaper journalism's highest honor - a Pulitzer prize.

Jack focuses on Alonzo Winslow, a 16-year-old drug dealer from the projects who has confessed to police that he brutally raped and strangled one of his crack clients. Jack convinces Alonzo's mother to cooperate with his investigation into the possibility of her son's innocence. But she has fallen for the oldest reporter's trick in the book. Jack's real intention is to use his access to report and write a story that explains how societal dysfunction and neglect created a 16-year-old killer. But as Jack delves into the story he soon realizes that Alonzo's so-called confession is bogus, and Jack is soon off and running on the biggest story he's had since The Poet crossed his path twelve years before.

This time Jack is onto a killer who has worked completely below police and FBI radar. His investigation leads him into the digital world of data collocation services where server farms are watched over by techs who liken themselves to scarecrows - keeping the birds of prey off their clients' data. But Jack inadvertently set off a digital tripwire and the killer - the Scarecrow - knows he's coming.

5 of 5 The scarecrow November 14, 2010

Scarecrow is the last of Connelly's books I have to read and I was once again rapt with it. He returned to a winning formula where it was characters we knew and the trusted format. I did not really like the stand alone book as much as these books.
I love his style, his build up of the story line and the constant twists and turns. He is a master of this genre and I would have no hesitation in recommending this book to readers. I thought it was one of the best of the books and I am glad Mr. Connelly moved back to his normal characters.I prefer the Bosch books but this series with McEvoy is nearly as good.
I cannot wait to collect Reversal.

5 of 5 Scarecrow / Mystery May 14, 2010
Reviewer: M. CLEMENT from COLLEGE STATION, TX United States
LA Times Crime Reporter, Jack McEvoy and FBI Agent, Rachel Walling are featured in this thriller. Newspapers can't complete with the Internet news. Jack is given  2 weeks notice that he will be laid off and he will train his replacement. Jack is determined to go out with the best possible column, maybe a candidate for a Pulitzer. However he starts losing stories to other reporters. After receiving a call from the Grandmother that insists her boy, 16 year-old gang-banger, is innocent of the brutal rape and torture of an exotic dancer, Jack decides to investigate. Jack stumbles on an identical murder committed in Vegas that law enforcement did not identify as a possible serial murder. Jack's identity is stolen and someone is trying to kill him. Jack is tenacious and will not give up on solving the case and getting his story. Jack is pleasantly surprised to receive help from former love, FBI Agent  Rachel Walling. This is great thriller involving Internet hackers and trolls.
