In the Nevada desert, an experiment has gone horribly wrong. A cloud of nanoparticles—micro-robots—has escaped from the laboratory. This cloud is self-sustaining and self-reproducing. It is intelligent and learns from experience. For all practical purposes, it is alive.

It has been programmed as a predator. It is evolving swiftly, becoming more deadly with each passing hour.

Every attempt to destroy it has failed.

And we are the prey.

As fresh as today's headlines, Michael Crichton's most compelling novel yet tells the story of a mechanical plague and the desperate efforts of a handful of scientists to stop it. Drawing on up-to-the-minute scientific fact, Prey takes us into the emerging realms of nanotechnology and artificial distributed intelligence—in a story of breathtaking suspense. Prey is a novel you can't put down.

Because time is running out.

Fifty years ago, nanotechnology was a fleeting thought of imaginative science fiction. In today's world, nanotechnology is being tested for use IN humans to help fight diseases, such as cancer. In this story, scientists have created living nano-bots for the "greater good of mankind". However, the harnessed nanotech program escapes and has supreme organizational and learning capabilities that turn deadly. Flawlessly, designed to perform and adapt to change, the machines designed by man become hunters, showing the darkest side of artificial intelligence.

As always, Crichton writes with such a matter-of-factness that it is difficult to accept the possibilites with skepticism. His ability to take you "on scene" really delivers, as does his knack for describing in detail the creatures of his imagination. Fifty years from now, do we look back on this story and say "If he only KNEW..."?

I just want to say that I share Nikki's enthusiasm for the book, PREY.  Of course, I purchased the book from my favorite "book store"  VJ BOOKS.  I actually listened to this book in tape (full edition), when I was doing lot of driving for my work.  Mr. Crichton had me at the edge of my seat during my entire "reading/listening" to the book.

I was so very sad when Mr. Crichton died.  What a loss to readers everywhere.  His brilliance and skill with words will rarely be matched again.

I can't thank VJ BOOKS enough for their wonderful service.  My favorite book series is by Elizabeth Peters (The Amelia Peabody Series), and now have all first edition, autographed copies of her books.

I am still in search of the fist edition of the first book in this series,   Crocodile on the Sandbank.  I have several first editions from the UK.  My search will continue.

THANKS VJ for everything (including your wonderful service).
