New at VJ Books: READING COPIES
If you are looking for a book to "just read," to take to the
pool or beach without worrying about it getting ruined, we have books
for you! Over the year we gather the books we receive that do
not meet our grading standards and set them aside as reading copies for
our staff and friends. Now we're making them available to you! Each of these titles has the complete text.
You won't miss any of the story, but these are books in less than
perfect condition. They may have bumps, dents or tears, the jackets
could be torn or missing, or they could be later printings, advance
reading or bookclub editions. With even paperbacks now costing as much as ten dollars, these books at just $2.99 each are
a real bargain. We may have lots or we may have just one, but we're
adding new things all the time so check back regularly to see what's
fresh.

Paul Doiron MASSACRE POND
2013 NY: MinotaurOn
an unseasonably hot October morning, Bowditch is called to the scene
of a bizarre crime: the corpses of five moose have been found
senselessly butchered on the estate of Elizabeth Morse, a wealthy
animal rights activist who is buying up huge parcels of timberland to

at first seems like mindless slaughter-retribution by locals for the
job losses Morse's plan is already causing in the region-becomes far
more sinister when Morse's only daughter is killed in a suspicious
automobile accident. In
order to solve the controversial case, Bowditch risks losing
everything he holds dear: his best friends, his career as a laws

Loren D. Estleman CONFESSIONS OF AL CAPONE
2013 NY: ForgeIn
1944, after Al Capone has been released from prison, J. Edgar Hoover
assigns an FBI junior agent to insinuate himself into Capone's life and
gain his trust so that Hoover can nail as many of Capone's Mob
confederates as possible. Capone, suffering from the neurological
effects of syphilis, is alternately lucid, full of the passion and
energy that fueled his rise to the pinnacle of American crime...and
rambling or ranting, the broken shell of a man released from prison so
he could die at home with his family. With
the superb narrative gifts honed in dozens of novels, Estleman has
captured the essence of this American icon as never before. With subtly
nuanced portrayals of those in Capone's circle-his underrated wife Mae
Capone, members of the Chicago Outfit including the deadly Frank
Nitti-as well as his nemesis, J. Edgar Hoover, Hoover's secretary Helen
Gandy and others, The Confessions of Al Capone is a major literary achievement.

Bill Pronzini NEMESIS
2013 NY: ForgeYoung,
newly rich Verity Daniels claims to be receiving threatening demands
for money from a mysterious caller. When Jake Runyon agrees to

near the helpless victim she pretends to be. A
series of surprise revelations culminates in Runyon being falsely
accused of a crime that never happened, and he and his employers then
become the targets of a vicious legal vendetta. A sudden act of
violence turns the case upside down, leading to a much more serious
charge against Jake. With
the help of partner Tamara Corbin, Nameless puts aside the difficult
personal issue that has kept him sidelined at home and works to clear

Tom Young THE WARRIORS
2013 NY: Penguin
Lieutenant Colonel Michael
Parson has seen plenty of action lately, so he's happy with his new
assignment as safety officer at a Kyrgyzstan air base. It's a pretty
laidback way to spend the next year.
Or so he thought. On his
second day, a C-27 crashes on the runway with a load of electronic
gear-and opium. Recruiting his battle companion Sergeant Major Sophia
Gold as interpreter, he investigates not only the crash but the source
of the cargo, and the answers they find will lead them into a conflict
as lethal as any they have known.
A new Balkan war is brewing,
driven by a man of ruthless ambition. Parson himself flew during the
wars in Bosnia and Kosovo, so he's known their horror firsthand. But
neither he nor Gold has seen anything like what's about to happen now.
