You are here: Home > Ask John! > Is my copy of "The Immortalists" a book club edition?

Dear John:

I just finished going through the batch of books I recently purchased and realized that the signed "The Immortalists" novel is not a first edition, but a book club edition.  There is no price on the dust jacket nor is there a number line.

John replies:

The Immoralists is not a bookclub.  This book  was initially issued as an eBook only.  A short run hardcover was later issued by Thomas and Mercer.  As such, there is no price on the dustjacket, and no number line.  It is the only hardcover print edition, and technically the first edition.

This format will become more prevalent with the growth of eBook only releases.  It will be the only hardcover format, and the true first printing.  Collectors will have to decide whether this format meets their wants and expectations.

VJ Books is in the process of publishing true 1st editions of these kinds of titles under our imprint, Norwood Press.  Our first title, INMATE 1577 by Alan Jacobson, was issued last summer; we have several more scheduled for 2012.
