Everybody loves Michael Connelly’s series novels. No one compares to Harry Bosch, or the Lincoln Lawyer himself, Micky Haller. Connelly takes a break from his bestselling characters to introduce us to a new one, a young driven LAPD detective, Renée Ballard. She works the night shift in Hollywood, a once up-and-coming detective; she’s got the night shift as punishment for her sexual harassment complaint against a supervisor. One night she catches two cases: the brutal beating of a prostitute left for dead and the killing of a young woman in a nightclub shooting. She works her regular shift by night and in the daylight tries to solve these two cases that trouble her so. Along with BLOOD WORK and VOID MOON, Connelly once again proves that he can bring the depth and excitement he delivers in his series novel to a standalone. But this is probably not a standalone – I am sure we will see more.
