Dear John:

I was hoping that you could help me with a few facts about John Dunning's book - Booked to Die. I see it listed as first edition with two different publishers, Simon and Schuster and Scribner. Are these two from the same publisher? I see the same ISBN number listed with both. I would like to know who published the true first edition of the book and what the ISBN number should be. Also, what should I expect to pay for a first edition, fine/fine signed? (Karen, Alaska)

John responds:

Booked to Die was first published in 1992 by Scribner, ISBN 0684193833. Scribner is an imprint of Simon & Schuster, so technically they are the same company. Booked to Die is one of those elusive books that continues to increase in value. A signed collectible copy will bring $1200-$1400. If that is too rich for your blood or budget, later editions can be found for $75-$100. It is the same format and jacket art, so it is a respectable place-holder.
