On a sultry afternoon in the little river town of Saints Rest, Iowa, a seasoned killer strikes. In the White House, President Charles Bonner spends a dark night imagining the unthinkable - that he's about to lose his own party's support to a novice from the Midwest, a man far too powerful to be as homespun-innocent as he pretends. And in a rain-swept mansion on Long Island, a political kingmaker is found dead, apparently by his own hand. The two violent deaths, quickly linked by an avid press, spell more trouble for President Bonner. Reluctantly, he brings an outsider into his trusted circle of advisors - longtime friend Ben Driskill, a Wall Street lawyer whose unmasking of treachery in the Vatican several years earlier had earned him a reputation for near-savage determination to get at the truth. Ben puts aside his loathing for politics to investigate quietly, picking up the trail that begins in Iowa. But he is soon caught up in a nightmare of threats and cover-ups, with all he values most in his life at stake. And by the time the pattern of deception is clear, Ben Driskill is trying to save more than Charlie Bonner's troubled presidency. He is trying to save the future of free elections in the United States.
