Tom Newquist had been a detective in the Nota Lake sheriff's office--a tough, honest cop respected by everyone. When he dies suddenly, the townsfolk are saddened but not surprised. Just shy of sixty-five, Newquist worked too hard, smoked too much, and exercised too little. That plus an appetite for junk food made him a poster boy for an American Heart Association campaign. Newquist's widow doesn't doubt the coroner's report. But what Selma can't accept is not knowing what had bothered Tom so much in the last six weeks of his life. What was it that had made him prowl restlessly at night, that had him brooding constantly? Selma Newquist wants closure, and the only way she'll get it is if she finds out what it was that had bedeviled her husband. To do so, she needs Kinsey Millhone.

Kinsey should have dumped the case. It is vague and hopeless, like looking for a needle in a haystack. Instead, she sets up shop in Nota Lake where she discovers that looking for a needle in a haystack can draw blood. Likely her own when she becomes the target, and an entire town seems in for the kill.

Kinsey Milhone travels to Nevada to take care of Dietz while he recovers from knee replacement surgery. When Dietz is better able to get around Kinsey is anxious to leave and agrees to take a case for a Dietz customer since it is on her way back home. Mrs. Newquist's husband was troubled for a couple of months before he died of a heart attack. He was one of 2 Homicide Investigators for the small town of Nota Lake. In her investigation she finds everyone liked Tom, but no one liked his wife, Selma. The only thing she uncovers is that Tom's case notes notebook is missing.
Then someone breaks into her cabin and roughs her up. Something must have been bothering Mr. Newquist and now someone doesn't want her asking any more questions. Another adventure for Kinsey. She can't wait to get home and sleep in her own bed.
