Book Description

DANGEROUS BEHAVIOR by Walter Marks - FIRST EDITION BOOK

Dangerous Behavior pits the rigorously trained mind of a promising young New York City psychiatrist, David Rothberg, against the acute, if warped wits of a convicted murderer in a maximum security prison. After fifteen years in solitary confinement Victor Thomas Janko, once notoriously known as the Baby Carriage Killer, has attained national celebrity as a prison artist. He has also become eligible for parole. As the unseasoned Dr. Rothberg strives to determine whether Janko, "if released, would behave in a manner dangerous to others, he finds himself entangled more and more in the conflicting testimony and interests of key people associated with the case. There's Stevie Karp, a guard at New York's Vanderkill Upstate Correctional Facility, for one. He has no doubts whatever about Janko's guilt or danger: he's often heard the prisoner boast in detail about the horrific crime. With equal certainty, the prison priest declares that Janko is evil incarnate. Yet Janko himself claims to have no memory at all of committing the gruesome murder that captured news headlines nationwide. And his bouncy blonde girlfriend, Daisy Leszcynski, avows that her sweet, gentle, loving Victor could never kill anyone she also says that she can prove it. None of them, however, can profess to have no hidden agenda. Drawn continually deeper into the hazardous psychological quicksand of a seriously disturbed prospective parolee, David finds his judgment increasingly clouded - not just by his growing sympathy for his quite possibly falsely convicted client but also by an emotional miasma he cannot escape by fleeing to a prison upstate. For David, too, has his secrets, and they bind his destiny bloodily to Janko's own.
