Despite a pretty silly, overly melodramatic shootout near the close  of  this, Berenson's 12th thriller starring rogue ex-CIA agent John Wells, "The Deceivers" is still a better-than-average read. Not up to Berenson's usual first-rate standards perhaps. but still better than much of the stuff being published today. Vinny Duto,  former CIA director, is now POTUS, which doesn't add to the book's credibility, but Berenson's first-hand knowledge of spycraft strengthens the  book's overall appeal.
Final grade: Somewhere between C+ and B-, halfway between three and four stars.
