In 1993 she graduated magna cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in international relations. She also wrote romance novels using the pseudonym Alicia Scott. Raised in Hillsboro, Oregon, she graduated from the city's Glencoe High School. Her novel Gone is set in a fictionalized version of Tillamook, Oregon.
She lives with her husband, daughter, and two dogs in New Hampshire and is currently at work on her next thriller.
