Martha Grimes Martha Grimes was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on May 2, 1931. She is the is the bestselling author of 22 Richard Jury mysteries. She is also a poet and professor.

Grimes earned her B.A. and M.A. from the University of Maryland at College Park. She was an instructor of English at the University of Iowa, as well as an assistant professor of English at Frostburg State College (now University) in Frostburg, Maryland. Her last teaching position was professor of English at Montgomery College in Tacoma Park, Maryland.

Her 1999 book, Biting the Moon, dealt with issues of animal abuse and featured two adolescent heroes. Grimes donated two thirds of her royalty profits to various U.S. animal abuse organizations all over the country.

In 2003, Grimes rocked the publishing world with her send up of the publishing world in her hilarious Foul Matter, which poked fun at editors, agents, and writers alike.

Martha Grimes has one son, a public relations executive in Washington, DC, her daughter-in-law, and two grandsons.
