Value of Signed Remaindered Book versus Unsigned Pristine First Edition

Dear John and Virginia:

I found your site while searching for terms like remainder marks and it had a lot of good info. I hope it's okay if I ask one question that I didn't find an answer to:

Generally, does a signed copy of a book with a remainder mark have more value than an unmarked, unsigned book?

Specifically, I can order signed hardcover copies of the Mistborn trilogy by Brandon Sanderson but they all come with remainder marks and I'm not sure if it would be worth replacing the hardcovers I already have.

John Replies:

Hi Gally -

It's kind of in the eye of the beholder. Personally, if the author is still living and a possibility for future signings exist, I would prefer the unsigned, pristine copy. However, if future signing is unlikely, I would take the signed remainder marked copy.
