"Is it Safe to Read the First Edition/Signed Copies in Your Collection?"

Josh Asks:

Hi -

Hope all is well. I recently got into collecting and discovered your site (very helpful) I just read the newsletter on what to read and what to collect. Question on that - Are you recommending that first edition and/or signed copies actually not be read to keep the condition?

Thank you.
-Josh

John Replies:

Tough question.

I read mine - carefully, making sure that I don't open them enough to break the spines.

Of course as you move into more valuable titles ($100+), I'd grab a copy from the Goodwill or local thrift shop for reading, or grab a paperback from Amazon.

Have fun.
John
